On Whitham theory for perturbed integrable equations

Whitham theory of modulations is developed for periodic waves described by nonlinear wave equations integrable by the inverse scattering transform method associated with 2 × 2 matrix or second order scalar spectral problems. The theory is illustrated by derivation of the Whitham equations for perturbed Korteweg-de Vries equation and nonlinear Schrödinger equation with linear damping.

Approximate Solutions of General Perturbed Kdv-burgers Equations

In this article, we present some approximate analytical solutions to the general perturbed KdV-Burgers equation with nonlinear terms of any order by applying the homotopy analysis method (HAM). While compared with the Adomain decomposition method (ADM) and the homotopy perturbation method (HPM), the HAM contains the auxiliary convergence-control parameter ~ and the control function H(x, t), whi...

A Theory of the Perturbed Consumer with General Budgets

We consider demand systems for utility-maximizing consumers facing general budget constraints whose utilities are perturbed by additive linear shifts in marginal utilities. Budgets are required to be compact but are not required to be convex. We define demand generating functions (DGF) whose subgradients with respect to these perturbations are convex hulls of the utility-maximizing demands. We ...

Asymptotic Decay of Nonoscillatory Solutions of General Nonlinear Difference Equations

The authors consider themth order nonlinear difference equations of the form Dmyn+qnf(yσ(n)) = ei, where m ≥ 1, n ∈N = {0,1,2, . . .}, an > 0 for i= 1,2, . . . ,m−1, an ≡ 1, D0yn = yn, Diyn = an∆Di−1yn, i = 1,2, . . . ,m, σ(n) → ∞ as n → ∞, and f : R → R is continuous with uf(u) > 0 for u = 0. They give sufficient conditions to ensure that all bounded nonoscillatory solutions tend to zero as n→...
